Adam Hogg – Ann Inglis

Adam Hogg‘s place and date of birth and parents’ names are not known.

Ann Inglis, born c.1765. Ann’s place of birth and parents’ names are not known.

Her daughter Janet’s death record gives her name as Agnes.

There is an Adam Hogg born to Thomas Hogg and Janet Dick in Jedburgh on 25 April 1771, and an Ann Ingles born to Adam Ingles and Christian Orrock in Beath on 2 February 1766. These four parents’ names correspond with the names of Adam and Ann’s first four children, and the name ‘Dick’ appears as a middle name in another two children.

Adam and Ann Ingles were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Dunfermline, Fife on 24 May 1793 and in the parish of Ballingry, Fife on 25 May. They were married on 21 June.

Adam is said to be a Labourer in Gellet at the time of his daughter Janet’s birth in 1795.

CHILDREN

Christian Hogg, born in Dunfermline, Fife on 18 July 1794.

Christian died just two weeks later on 7 August 1794.

Janet Hogg, born in Dunfermline, Fife on 12 September 1795.

Janet married James Carmichael (b. Torryburn, Fife on 27 April 1794), son of Archibald Carmichael and Margaret Henderson. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Torryburn on 4 August 1820 and in the parish of Dunfermline on 14 August.

Janet and James are in Parkneuk, Dunfermline on the 1841 Census, in Elgin Colliery, Dunfermline on the 1851 and 1861 Census and in Baldridgeburn, Dunfermline on the 1871 Census. James was a Grieve in Elgin Colliery and latterly a Railway Pointsman.

Janet died in Rumblingwell, Dunfermline on 22 August 1873, age 78.

James died in Baldridgeburn on 16 May 1880, age 86.

Thomas Hogg, born in Dunfermline, Fife on 30 June 1797.

Thomas married Catherine Ferguson (b. Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, or Tullieallan, Perthshire c.1800), daughter of James and Elizabeth Ferguson. Elizabeth’s maiden surname is possibly Hogg; a Katharine Ferguson was born in Clackmannan on 26 May 1799 to James Ferguson and Elizabeth Hogg.

Thomas and Catherine were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Clackmannan on 21 May 1820.

Thomas and Catherine are in Birdshill, Kirkliston, West Lothian on the 1841 Census, in Currie, Midlothian on the 1851 Census, at Over Gogar, Ratho, Midlothian on the 1861 Census and at Hermiston House West Lodge, Currie on the 1871 Census.

Catherine died in Stenhouse Mills, Corstorphine, Edinburgh on 24 October 1878, age 79.

Thomas died in Stenhouse Mills on 1 April 1879, age 81.

DEATHS

Agnes died in Dunfermline on 1 February 1821, age 54.

A gravestone in the grounds of Dunfermline Abbey was erected by Adam Hogg in memory of his daughter Christian, and later had Ann’s death added. However, there are no details of Adam’s death, in spite of leaving a blank space for the purpose.
