Alexander Fleming‘s parents and place and date of birth are unknown.

Elisabeth Gilmour, born in Dalserf, Lanarkshire c.1786, daughter of John Gilmour and Christina Melvin.

Elizabeth, now widowed, is in High Quarter, Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 1841 Census and in Low Quarter, Hamilton on the 1851 and 1861 Census.

CHILDREN

Alexander Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 24 January 1804.

Alexander married Helen Haddow (b. Hamilton, Lanarkshire c.1804). They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Hamilton on 19 June 1825.

Alexander and Helen are in High Quarter, Hamilton on the 1841 Census and at Knowetop Farm, Hamilton on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 Census.

Alexander died at Knowetop Farm on 13 November 1875, age 71.

John Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 21 November 1808.

Christina Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 5 May 1811.

Andrew Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 24 May 1813.

Andrew married Jean Bell (b. Hamilton, Lanarkshire c.1813). They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Hamilton on 4 December 1836.

Andrew and Jean are in James Street, Hamilton on the 1841 Census, and at 16 James Street on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 Census.

James Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 30 June 1816.

James married Agnes Hamilton (b. Hamilton, Lanarkshire c.1814), daughter of John Hamilton and Janet Semple. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Hamilton on 4 January 1835.

James died in the Quarter Mining Disaster on 16 March 1841, age 24, at Avon Braes drift mine, one of four men killed while going to the rescue of seven others caught in an explosion, who also died.

Agnes is at Knowetop Farm on the 1841 Census, in Meikle Earnock, Hamilton on the 1851 Census, in Low Waters, Hamilton on the 1861 Census, in Strathaven Road, Hamilton on the 1871 Census, in Kirkton Street, Carluke on the 1881 Census, and in High Street, Carluke on the 1891 and 1901 Census.

Agnes died in High Street, Carluke on 19 December 1905, age 91.

William Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 2 September 1819.

William married Elizabeth Maxwell, born in Dalserf, Lanarkshire and baptised on 25 August 1822, daughter of Hugh Maxwell and Jean Frame. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Dalserf on 23 August 1840 and in the parish of Hamilton on 30 August 1840.

William and Elizabeth are in Coltness Iron Works, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire on the 1841 Census.

William and Elizabeth emigrated to Canada. They departed from Glasgow on the barque Lulan on 17 August 1848, arriving in Pictou County, Nova Scotia on 18 September 1848.

William died in Stellarton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia on 26 October 1864, age 45.

Elizabeth died in Stellarton on 10 May 1898, age 76.

One of William and Elizabeth’s sons, John, visited Scotland and there exists a letter in which he recollects seeing the location of a mine where his uncle had died. This is a reference to James Fleming, above.

Michael Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 9 November 1821.

Michael is in High Quarter, Hamilton on the 1841 Census and in Low Quarter, Hamilton on the 1851 Census. His occupation is Coal Miner.

Michael married Grace Gowans (b. Dalserf, Lanarkshire c.1829), daughter of William Gowans and Janet Millar. They were married in Dalserf on 27 February 1857.

Michael and Grace are at 14 Glengowan, Larkhall, Lanarkshire on the 1861 Census. His occupation is Iron Stone Miner.

Michael was also known as Mitchell. He later was an Innkeeper in Glengowan.

Michael died on 23 August 1872, age 50, although his gravestone says 49.

Grace died in Uddingston on 18 August 1894, age 65.

Elisabeth Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 24 September 1825.

Elisabeth is in High Quarter, Hamilton on the 1841 Census and in Low Quarter, Hamilton on the 1851 Census.

Thomas Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 16 April 1829.

Thomas is in High Quarter, Hamilton on the 1841 Census and in Low Quarter, Hamilton on the 1851 Census.

DEATHS

Elizabeth died in Low Quarter, Hamilton on 2 March 1868, age 82.
