Alexander Frood – Marion Symington

Alexander Frood and Marion Symington‘s parents and places of birth are unknown. They were both born c.1744.

There is an Alexander Frood, son of Hugh Frood in Milnmuir, born on 2 March 1743. This is where Alexander and Marion’s son Alexander was born. A marriage is recorded between Hugh Frood and Grisel How in Carmichael in 1740; Alexander and Marion have a daughter named Grisel.

Milnmuir, now known as Millmuir, is shown on Roy’s Map of Scotland. Drummonds is also on the map, shown as Drumming; it is no longer in existence.

There is a Marion Symington, daughter of Andrew Symington, born in Carmichael on 13 May 1744. Andrew ties in with Alexander and Marion’s son Andrew.

Alexander and Marion were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Carmichael, Lanarkshire on 4 June 1768.

Alexander was a Farmer at Drummonds, according to his gravestone. Drummonds was a farm in the parish of Lesmahagow, not far from Milnmuir.

CHILDREN

There are three children born in the parish of Carmichael between 1769 and 1773 and recorded under Alexander Frood only. It is possible that they are children of Alexander and Marion. Their names are Margaret (30 March 1769), Hugh (15 August 1771) and Grisel (28 February 1773).

Alexander married Ann Wilson (b. Douglas, Lanarkshire c.1777), daughter of John Wilson and June Moffat. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Douglas on 13 January 1799.

Alexander and Ann are at Ranald’s Orchard, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire on the 1841 and 1851 Census.

Alexander died at East Ranald’s Orchard on 28 August 1857, age 79.

Ann is at Ranald’s Orchard on the 1861 Census.

Ann died at Ranald’s Orchard on 1 June 1867, age 90.

John Frood, born at Milnmuir Farm, Carmichael, Lanarkshire on 2 January 1785.

John married Elisabeth Smith (b. Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire c.1797). They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Lesmahagow on 6 November 1818.

John is at Hagholm Farm in the parish of Lanark on the 1841 Census; Elisabeth does not seem to be present.

John and Elisabeth are at Hagholm Farm on the 1851 and 1861 Census.

John, now widowed, died at Hagholm Farm on 20 August 1863, age 78.

DEATHS

Marion died on 18 September 1812, age 68.

Alexander died on 25 August 1831, age 87.
