Duncan Sinclair, born in South Knapdale, Argyll c.1766, son of Neil Sinclair and Mary Morrison.
Catherine Baxter, born in Kilbride, North Knapdale, Argyll c.1771, daughter of Malcolm Baxter and Margaret MacLean.
Duncan and Catherine are at Ashens in South Knapdale on the 1841 and 1851 Census. Duncan is an Agricultural Labourer in 1841, and a Pauper in 1851.
Ashens is a few miles north of Tarbert. It is shown on the Roy map as ‘Askens’.

Elizabeth Sinclair, born in North Knapdale and baptised in January 1802.
Elizabeth, aka Betty, is with her parents at Ashens on the 1841 and 1851 Census.
Mary Sinclair.
No other information about Mary is known, other than a mention on her mother’s death record: “Mary, Dec.“.
Margaret Sinclair, born c.1809.
Margaret is with her parents at Ashens in 1841.
Donald Sinclair, born in Dail, South Knapdale and baptised on 5 January 1811.
Donald married Ann Hartford (b. Campbeltown, Argyll c.1824), daughter of Peter Hartford, Seaman, and Mary Sweeney.
Donald and Ann are in Carlisle Road, Chapelhall, Lanarkshire on the 1851 Census. Donald’s occupation is Labourer; according to Ann’s death record, he was an Ironworker.
Donald died in 1853, age 43, according to his mother’s death record. Given his occupation, he may have died in an industrial accident.
Ann married again, to Alexander Richardson (b. Moffat, Dumfries-shire c.1825), Foundry Labourer, son of John Richardson and Jane Scott. They were married at 18 Newhall Terrace, Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 26 September 1862.
Ann and Alexander are at 17 Montgomery Street, Glasgow on the 1871 Census.
Ann, now widowed, is at 82 Bernard Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow on the 1881 Census, at 77 Bernard Street on the 1891 Census and at 23 Queen Mary Street, Glasgow on the 1901 Census.
Ann died at 23 Queen Mary Street on 9 March 1905, age 83.
Malcolm Sinclair, born in South Knapdale and baptised on 10 July 1813.
Malcolm died before 1855, according to his mother’s death certificate.
DEATHS
Catherine died at Ashens Farm, South Knapdale on 1 April 1855, age 84.
Duncan died at Ashens Farm on 31 March 1857, age 91. His occupation is formerly Tailor on both his and his wife’s death certificates.
