Elizabeth married Alexander Monroe. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Avondale on 22 November 1833.7National Records of Scotland, 1833 Marriages, 621/40/245

Elizabeth died in 1835 at the age of 26 according to her father’s death certificate. The death of Elizabeth Fleming, wife of Alexander Monroe, is recorded in the Avondale Old Parish Records.8National Records of Scotland, 1836 Deaths and Burials, 621/40/393

John Fleming, born in Avondale on 31 December 1812.10National Records of Scotland, 1809 Births, 621/20/100

John lived at Low Ploughland Farm for nearly all his life. He is there on every census from 1841 to 1891.

John died at Vicarlea Cottage, Strathaven on 12 March 1900, age 87.11National Records of Scotland, 1900 Deaths, 621/22 In his will John left a legacy to various members of his family. One such beneficiary, who used the legacy to fund a career in medicine, was his nephew, Alexander Fleming.

Alexander Fleming, born at Ploughland Farm on 9 February 1814.

Alexander married Grace Anderson (b. Greenockdyke, Muirkirk, Ayrshire on 19 June 1816), daughter of William Anderson and Agnes Kirkland. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Muirkirk on 18 June 1839.

Alexander and Grace are at Glengavel Mill, Avondale on the 1841 and 1851 Census. They are at Thriepland Farm, Eaglesham, Renfrewshire on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 Census and at 11 Grantley Gardens, Pollockshaws, Renfrewshire on the 1901 Census.

Grace died in Pollockshaws on 29 May 1905, age 88.

Hugh Fleming, born at Ploughland Farm on 23 March 1816.

Hugh is at Low Ploughland Farm on the 1841 and 1851 Census.

Hugh married Jane Young (b. Avondale on 11 April 1843), daughter of Thomas Young and Jane Anderson, in Avondale on 30 May 1862.

Hugh and Jane are at Lochfield Farm, Loudoun, Ayrshire on the 1871 Census.

Jane died at Lochfield Farm on 30 March 1873, age 29.

Hugh married again, to Grace Stirling Morton (b. Galston, Ayrshire c.1847), daughter of John Morton and Grace Steel, at Rigfoot Farm, Avondale on 17 March 1876. One of the children from this second marriage was Alexander Fleming, discoverer of penicillin.

Hugh and Grace are at Lochfield Farm on the 1881 Census.

Hugh died at Lochfield Farm on 20 October 1888, age 72.

Grace is at Lochfield Farm on the 1891 and 1901 Census. On the 1911 Census she is at 57 Loveday Road, Ealing, Middlesex.

Janet Fleming, born at Ploughland Farm on 29 December 1818.

Janet is at Low Ploughland Farm on the 1841 Census.

A Janet Fleming married Daniel Murphy or Murchie in Avondale in 1844. This Janet Fleming died in Kirkmichael in 1896; her mother’s maiden name is Craig. There is a Daniel Murphy employed as an Agricultural Labourer at Bankend in 1841.

William Fleming, born at Ploughland Farm on 17 January 1824.

William is at Low Ploughland Farm on the 1841 Census.

William married Isabella Morrison (b. Avondale, Lanarkshire c.1823), daughter of John Morrison and Jane Lindsay. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Avondale on 20 August 1846.

William and Isabella are at Templeland Farm, Avondale on the 1851 Census.

Isabella is at Templeland Farm on the 1861 Census. Her relationship is given as ‘Wife’, but William is not present. On the 1871 Census she is also at Templeland Farm, but this time she is identified as ‘Widow’, and head of the family.

William is not identified as deceased on his father’s death certificate of 1855. However, his death has not been found in the statutory records.

Isabella is at Overhouse Farm, Avondale on the 1891 and 1901 Census.

Isabella died at Bankend Farm, Avondale on 4 September 1910, age 87.

Margaret Fleming, born at Ploughland Farm on 23 June 1826.

Margaret is at Low Ploughland Farm on the 1841 and 1851 Census.

Mary Fleming, born at Ploughland Farm on 15 June 1829.

Mary lived at Low Ploughland Farm for most of her life.

Mary died in Avondale on 7 May 1895, age 65.

Marion Fleming, born at Ploughland Farm on 18 January 1832.

Marion died in 1833 according to her father’s death certificate.

DEATHS

Hugh died at Low Ploughland Farm on 15 February 1855, age 81.

Mary died at Low Ploughland Farm on 22 January 1856, age 70.
