Agnes Hamilton, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire c.1814, daughter of John Hamilton and Janet Semple.
James and Agnes were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Hamilton on 4 January 1935.
Agnes is at Knowetop Farm, Hamilton on the 1841 Census, where her occupation is Sewer. She is in Meikle Earnock, Lanarkshire on the 1851 Census, in Low Waters, Hamilton on the 1861 Census and in Strathaven Road, Hamilton on the 1871 Census, where her occupation is Seamstress.
On the 1881 Census she is in Kirkton Street, Carluke, and on the 1891 and 1901 Census she is in High Street, Carluke.
CHILDREN
Janet Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire c.1835.
Janet is at Knowetop Farm, Hamilton on the 1841 Census. She is possibly employed as a House Servant at 70 Townhead Street in Hamilton on the 1851 Census.
Janet married her cousin William Fleming (b. New Monkland, Lanarkshire c.1829), Coal Miner, son of John Fleming (her father’s older brother) and Elizabeth Shanks, in Meikle Earnock, Lanarkshire on 18 April 1856. For some reason, Janet’s parents are not listed on the marriage certificate.
Janet and William are in Low Quarter, Lanarkshire on the 1861 Census.
Janet, now apparently widowed, is in Hamilton on the 1871 Census and at 2 Low Quarter on the 1881 Census.
Janet died at 41a Calder Street, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire on 11 January 1899, age 63.
Elizabeth Gilmour Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire c.1837.
Elizabeth is at Knowetop Farm on the 1841 Census and possibly employed as a Servant at 133 Great Hamilton Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire on the 1851 Census. She is at Skeoch Farm, East Kilbride, Lanarkshire on the 1861 Census, employed as a Dairymaid.
Elizabeth married Alexander McWilliam (b. Cambuslang, Lanarkshire on 6 April 1845), son of Thomas McWilliam and Margaret Thom, in Low Waters, Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 3 November 1865.
Alexander and Elizabeth are in Lightburn on the 1871 Census, where he an Agricultural Labourer, at Blantyre Works farm on the 1881 Census, where he is a Cow Feeder, in Hart’s Land, Blantyre on the 1891 Census, where he is a Flesher, and in Gilmour Place, Blantyre on the 1901 Census where he is a Butcher.
Elizabeth died in Gilmour Place on 2 June 1903, age 66.
Alexander is at Sandyknowes Farm, Blantyre in 1922.
Alexander married again, to Jessie Cameron (b. Ardnamurchan, Argyll c.1886), daughter of James Cameron and Catherine Connell, at 19 Howard Street, Glasgow on 9 February 1922.
Alexander died at Pothill Farm, Auchterarder, Perthshire on 30 August 1925, age 80.
Jessie died at Laga Farm, Acharacle, Argyll on 1 September 1951, age 65.

Agnes married James Frew (b. Dalserf, Lanarkshire c.1841), coal Miner, son of Alexander Frew and Janet Thomson, in Quarter, Lanarkshire on 24 April 1868.
Agnes and James are in Hamilton on the 1871 Census, at Smithy Cottage, Low Quarter on the 1881 Census, in Gateside Street, Hamilton on the 1891 Census and at 66 Union Street, Hamilton on the 1901 Census.
James died at 6 Wellhall Road, Hamilton on 27 April 1904, age 63.
Agnes died at 6 Wellhall Road on 23 June 1913, age 74.
Christina Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire c. January/February 1841.
Christina is at Knowetop Farm on the 1841 Census, where her age is given as ‘4 months’. On the 1851 Census she is possibly in Low Waters, employed as a House Servant (at ten years of age!) and on the 1861 Census she is possibly at Barnhill Farm, Blantyre, Lanarkshire employed as a Dairymaid.
Christina married Thomas Balfour McWilliam (b. Cambuslang, Lanarkshire on 4 December 1841), son of Thomas McWilliam and Margaret Thom, in Low Waters on 23 June 1865. At that time Christina was at Stonefield Farm, Blantyre.
Thomas and Christina are at Greenhall Coachman’s House, Blantyre on the 1871 Census, where Thomas is employed as a Coachman.
On the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 Census they are at Greenhall Farm, Blantyre where Thomas is a Farmer.
Thomas died at Greenhall Farm on 28 August 1917, age 75.
Christina died at Greenhall Farm on 28 March 1932, age 91.
DEATHS
James died in the Quarter Mining Disaster of 16 March 1841, one of four men killed while going to the aid of others killed or injured by an explosion at Avon Braes coal mine. He was 24 years old.
Margaret had an illegitimate child, Margaret, born in Hamilton c.1853. On the 1861 Census Margaret’s surname is given as Hepburn, but thereafter it is given as Fleming. Margaret never married, and lived with her mother. She was a Schoolteacher, and one of the first women members of the teachers’ union, the Educational Institute of Scotland. She died at 102 High Street, Carluke on 30 July 1946, age 93. James Fleming is given as her father’s name on her death certificate.
A Thomas Hepburn (b. Avondale, Lanarkshire c.1820), employed as a Farm Labourer, is a near-neighbour of Agnes Hamilton in Meikle Earnock on the 1851 Census. Agnes took out a paternity decree against Thomas Hepburn in 1854.
Agnes died in High Street, Carluke on 19 December 1905, age 91.
