John Hamilton – Janet Semple

John Hamilton, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire c.1781, son of Thomas Hamilton and Margaret Black.

Janet Semple, born in Glassford, Lanarkshire c.1780, daughter of William Semple and Agnes Tennant.

John and Janet were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Hamilton on 26 April 1812.

John and Janet are at Knowetop Farm, Hamilton on the 1841 Census and in Meikle Earnock, Hamilton on the 1851 Census.

CHILDREN

Agnes Hamilton, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire c.1814.

Agnes married James Fleming, born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 30 June 1816, son of Alexander Fleming and Elisabeth Gilmour. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Hamilton on 4 January 1835.

James died in the Quarter Mining Disaster on 16 March 1841, age 24, at Avon Braes drift mine, one of four men killed while going to the rescue of seven others caught in an explosion, who also died.

Agnes is at Knowetop Farm on the 1841 Census, in Meikle Earnock, Hamilton on the 1851 Census, in Low Waters, Hamilton on the 1861 Census, in Strathaven Road, Hamilton on the 1871 Census, in Kirkton Street, Carluke on the 1881 Census, and in High Street, Carluke on the 1891 and 1901 Census.

Agnes died in High Street, Carluke on 19 December 1905, age 91.

DEATHS

John, age 76, and Janet, age 77, died within hours of each other in Meikle Earnock, Hamilton on 3 March 1857.
