Peter Hartford – Mary Sweeney

Peter Hartford and Mary Sweeney‘s parents and places and dates of birth are unknown.

Peter was a Revenue Seaman, according to his daughter Ann’s death record.

Mary’s name is not on Ann’s death record, the section for it has been left blank. On the record of Ann’s second marriage, her mother’s name is given as Mary Swan.

On the 1841 Census there is a 45 year old Mary Halfred, Pauper, in Georges Street, Campbeltown, and a 15 year old Rose Halford, Farm Servant, at Ballemenach Farm, Campbeltown. However, both Mary and Rose are said to have been born in Ireland.

Ann or Roseanne Hartford, born in Campbeltown, Argyll c.1824.

Ann is the name given on her death certificate. On the record of her second marriage her name is given as Rosanne.

Ann married Donald Sinclair (b. Dail, South Knapdale, Argyll and baptised on 5 January 1811), son of Duncan Sinclair and Catherine Baxter.

Ann and Donald are in Carlisle Road, Chapelhall, Lanarkshire on the 1851 Census. Donald’s occupation is Labourer; according to Ann’s death record, he was an Ironworker.

Donald died in 1853, age 43, according to his mother’s death record. Given his occupation, he may have died in an industrial accident.

Ann married again, to Alexander Richardson (b. Moffat, Dumfries-shire c.1825), Foundry Labourer, son of John Richardson and Jane Scott. They were married at 18 Newhall Terrace, Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 26 September 1862.

Ann and Alexander are at 17 Montgomery Street, Glasgow on the 1871 Census.

Ann, now widowed, is at 82 Bernard Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow on the 1881 Census, at 77 Bernard Street on the 1891 Census and at 23 Queen Mary Street, Glasgow on the 1901 Census.

Ann died at 23 Queen Mary Street on 9 March 1905, age 83.

Jean Hartford, born in Campbeltown, Argyll on 1 November 1830.

Mary Hartford, born in Campbeltown, Argyll on 14 August 1833.

Jean and Mary were daughters of Peter Harford and Mary Sweeny. Peter is a ‘Mariner’ and ‘Fisherman’ according to their respective records of birth.

Neither Jean nor Mary seem to be on the 1841 or 1851 census, and neither are their parents.
