Robert Howie, born at Shawhill Farm, Mearns, Renfrewshire on 4 March 1804, son of Alan Howie and Janet Findlay

Isabella Craig, born at Flender Farm, Mearns, Renfrewshire on 30 November 1809, daughter of John Craig and Jean McFarlane.

Robert and Isabella were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Mearns, Renfrewshire on 26 March 1830.

CHILDREN

Jane Howie, born at Shiels (possibly Muirshield Farm), Mearns on 23 September 1830.

Jane is at Cleuch Farm, Mearns on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Census.

Jane never married. She died at 45 Eglinton Street, Glasgow on 9 December 1869, age 39. Her occupation was Milk Retailer.

Allan Howie, born at Muirshield Farm, Mearns on 8 May 1832.

Allan is at Muirshield Farm on the 1841 Census and at Netherplace Farm, Mearns on the 1851 Census, employed as an Agricultural Labourer.

Allan married Mary Currie (b. Mearns, Renfrewshire c.1831), daughter of Duncan Currie and Mary Campbell. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Mearns on 30 May 1852. Mary had been a Servant at Netherplace Farm on the 1851 Census.

Allan and Mary are at 71 Centre Street, Govan, Lanarkshire on the 1871 Census, where Allan is a Storeman in a Bond, and at 45 Eglinton Street, Glasgow on the 1871 Census, where Allan is a Store Keeper.

Allan died in the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow on 24 September 1871, age 39. His usual address is 45 Eglinton Street, and his occupation is Distiller’s Store Keeper.

Mary died in Govan Parochial Asylum on 13 December 1889, age 57.

Thomas Howie, born at Shiels (possibly Muirshield Farm) on 16 February 1834.

Thomas possibly died young; no further record of him has been found.

Janet Howie, born in Mearns c.1838.

Janet’s year of birth varies between 1835 (according to the 1841 Census) and 1840 (according to the 1881 Census). Her marriage and death certificate are at least in accord, giving a year of 1838.

Janet is at Cleuch Farm, Mearns on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Census.

Janet married Alexander Imrie (b. Norriestown Farm, Kincardine, Perthshire on 6 December 1831), son of Alexander Imrie and Janet Miller, at Sheddens Farm, Cathcart, Renfrewshire on 31 December 1861.

Janet and Alexander are at Eastwood Mains Farm, Eastwood, Renfrewshire on the 1871 Census and at Stewartfield Farm, Blantyre, Lanarkshire on the 1881 and 1891 Census.

Alexander died at Stewartfield Farm on 24 March 1900, age 68.

Janet is at Hartfield Farm, Blantyre on the 1901 Census.

Janet died at Stewartfield Farm on 29 July 1901, age 63.

ISABELLA CRAIG – SECOND MARRIAGE

Robert possibly died some time around 1838 or 1839.

Isabella married again, to John Gilmour (b. Neilston, Renfrewshire c. August 1819), a Farm Servant at Neilstonside Farm. They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Neilston on 1 June 1839 and in the parish of Mearns, Renfrewshire on 9 June 1839, and were married on 19 June 1839.

There is no absolute proof that this is the same Isabella Craig, but on her daughter Janet’s marriage certificate, her name is given as ‘Isabella Gilmour, formerly Howie, M.S. Craig’. Isabella may have knocked a year or two off her age in order to lessen the age difference between her and John, as subsequent official records have her year of birth somewhere around 1811 to 1813.

There is an Isabella Craig born in Renfrewshire in 1812, but the birth is recorded in the parish of Neilston, not Mearns.

Isabella and John are in Main Street, Gorbals, Glasgow on the 1841 Census and at 43 Surrey Street, Gorbals on the 1851 Census. John’s occupation is Carter.

In 1852 Isabella and John and their new family emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York aboard the ship Martha’s Vineyard on 11 August 1852. They settled in Kendall County, Illinois.

Isabella is in Main Street, Gorbals, Glasgow on the 1841 Census and at 43 Surrey Street, Gorbals on the 1851 Census. She emigrated to the United States with her parents in 1852.

Isabella is in Oswego, Kendall County on the 1880 Census.

Isabella never married. She died in Kendall County, Illinois on 8 February 1908, age 69.

John Gilmour, b. Mearns, Renfrewshire on 15 October 1841.

John is at 43 Surrey Street, Gorbals, Glasgow on the 1851 Census. He emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1852. He is in Oswego, Kendall County, Illinois on the 1860 Census.

John married Janet Nelson (b. Kinmaurs (Kilmaurs?), Scotland c.1841) in Kendall County on 15 October 1863.

John and Janet are in Wheatland Township, Will County, Illinois on the 1880 Census.

John, now widowed, is in Wheatland on the 1900 and 1910 Census and in Chapline Road, Wheatland on the 1920 Census.

John died in Aurora, Kane County, Illinois on 19 March 1926, age 84.

David Gilmour, b. Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 20 July 1843.

David died before 1851.

Mary Gilmour, b. Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 20 January 1845.

Mary is at 43 Surrey Street, Gorbals, Glasgow on the 1851 Census. She emigrated to the United States with her parents in 1852. She is in Oswego, Kendall County, Illinois on the 1860 Census.

Mary married Andrew Armour (b. Stewarton, Ayrshire on 12 April 1842), son of Andrew Armour and Elizabeth Findlay, in Kendall County on 29 June 1864.

Mary and Andrew are in Oswego on the 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census.

Andrew died in Kendall County on 30 November 1909, age 67.

Mary is in Plainfield, Will County, Illinois on the 1910 Census. She is at 410 Hoyles Avenue, Kendall in 1921, the year she became a naturalised US citizen.

Mary is at 141 Calumet Avenue, Aurora, Kane County in 1923, and also at the time of her death.

Mary died in Aurora on 22 February 1927, age 82.

James Gilmour, b. Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 26 January 1847.

James died before 1851.

Ann Gilmour, b. Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 22 September 1850.

Ann is at 43 Surrey Street, Gorbals, Glasgow on the 1851 Census. She emigrated to the United States with her parents in 1852.

Ann married William Anderson (b. Fenwick, Ayrshire on 5 November 1838), son of Thomas Anderson and Elizabeth Wallace, on 9 January 1869.

Ann died in Kendall County, Illinois on 5 August 1935, age 84.

James Gilmour, born in Kendall County, Illinois on 14 March 1853.

James married Mary Campbell (b. Barony, Lanarkshire on 19 April 1860), daughter of John Campbell and Mary Gray, in Kendall County on 28 February 1878.

James and Mary are in Wheatland, Will County, Illinois on the 1880, 1900 and 1910 Census, and at 235 Marion Avenue, Aurora, Kane County, Illinois on the 1920 Census.

Mary died in Aurora, Kane County on 9 March 1926, age 65.

James died in California on 28 September 1938, age 85.

DEATHS

Isabella died in Oswego Township, Kendall County on 12 November 1869, age 59.

John died in Oswego Township on 8 July 1900, age 81.
