William Dickie – Jean Watt

William Dickie, born Mauchline, Ayrshire on 1 July 1805, son of James Dickie and Margaret Wilson.

The Old Parish Record entry is for a James Dickie, but no other trace of James has been discovered, so it is possible that the OPR entry is an error, or that James was subsequently called William.

Jean Watt, born Millwell, Glassford, Lanarkshire c.1815, daughter of Thomas Watt and Janet Reid.

William and Jean were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of East Kilbride on 16 March 1834.

They are in Leaburn, East Kilbride on the 1841 Census where William is a Wright.

On the 1851 and 1861 Census they are at Rutheran Farm, Glassford, Lanarkshire.

Jean, now widowed, is in the Free Church Manse, Glassford on the 1871 Census and at Walston Place Farmhouse, Walston, Lanarkshire on the 1881 Census.

Janet married Alexander Dalglish of Shawtonhill Farm, Glassford (b. Galston, Ayrshire c.1822), son of William Dalglish and Elizabeth Fleming, at Rutheran Farm on 25 July 1856.

Janet and Alexander are at Shawtonhill Farm on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Census.

Alexander died at Shawtonhill Farm on 29 September 1889.

Janet, now widowed, is at Shawtonhill Farm on the 1891 Census and at Bullionhall Farm, East Kilbride on the 1901 Census.

Janet died at 35 Rumford Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 20 December 1909.

James Dickie, born in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire c.1836

James married Margaret Weir (b. Auchinleck, Ayrshire on 13 October 1839), daughter of James Weir and Jane Dickie, at Blackside Farm, Sorn, Ayrshire on 25 November 1870.

James and Margaret are at Rutheran Farm on the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census, and at Ardlamy Farm, Gigha, Argyllshire on the 1911 Census.

James died at Allan Cottage, Strathaven, Lanarkshire on 23 October 1912, age 76.

Margaret died at Townhill Farm, Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 27 February 1933, age 93.

Margaret died at Curlingmire Farm on 9 April 1902, age 75.

Andrew died at Thorn Cottage, Glassford on 30 August 1912, age 85.

Jean died at Mosfennan Lodge, Broughton, Lanarkshire on 14 June 1910, age 69.

Mary Dickie, born in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire c.1842.

Mary is at Rutheran Farm on the 1851 and 1861 Census.

Mary married Moses Forsyth (b. East Kilbride on 18 December 1838), son of James Forsyth and Margaret Struthers, at Rutheran Farm on 18 August 1863. Moses’ occupation is Grain Dealer and he lived in Chapelton.

Mary and Moses are at the Crown Hotel, Strathaven, Lanarkshire on the 1871 Census, where Moses is the Inn Keeper.

They are at Bankhead Farm, Kirkcaldy and Abbotshall, Fife on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census. Bankhead is also known as Bankhead of Raith.

Moses died at Bankhead Farm on 22 April 1913, age 74.

Mary died at 2 Novar Crescent, Kirkcaldy on 10 February 1922, age 80.

Agnes Dickie, born in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire c.1847

Agnes is at Rutheran Farm on the 1851 and 1861 Census.

Agnes married John Semple (b. Avondale, Lanarkshire c.1842), son of Matthew Semple and Margaret Watt, at Rutheran Farm on 11 December 1868.

Agnes and John are at Springfield Farm, Blantyre, Lanarkshire on the 1871 Census, at Craighead Farm, Blantyre on the 1881 Census, at 216 Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow on the 1891 Census and at 35 Rumford Street, Glasgow on the 1901 Census.

Agnes died at Newtown of Collessie, Fife on 29 June 1933, age 86. Her usual address is 5 Montgomery Street, Eaglesham, Renfrewshire.

John died at High Borland Farm, Eaglesham on 3 May 1935, age 93.

William Wilson Dickie, born in Glassford, Lanarkshire c.1852

William married Janet Dick (b. Cambuslang, Lanarkshire c.1861), daughter of Andrew Dick and Janet Boyd, at Thorn Farm, Glassford, Lanarkshire on 8 March 1878.

William and Janet are at Calderwood’s Land, East Kilbride on the 1881 Census, in Gas Works Road, East Kilbride on the 1891 Census and at Priesthill, East Kilbride on the 1901 Census.

William founded an Agricultural Engineering business, William Dickie & Sons, whose most well-known product was a windpump, examples of which can still be seen in parts of the countryside, and a swath-turner, in association with Massey-Harris.

William died at Braeside, Victoria Crescent, Clarkston, Renfrewshire on 7 May 1937.

Thomas Dickie, born at Rutheran Farm. Glassford on 11 June 1855.

Thomas is at Rutheran Farm on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Census.

Thomas married Grace Cullen (b. Bridgeton, Glasgow on 10 April 1858), daughter of William Cullen and Ellen Paterson, at 16 Annfield Street, Glasgow on 6 June 1882.

Thomas and Grace are at 14 Annfield Street, Glasgow on the 1891 and 1901 Census. Thomas’s occupation is Cow Feeder (1891) and Dairyman (1901).

Thomas died at Scooniehill Farm, St. Andrew’s, Fife on 12 June 1941, age 85.

Charlotte Dickie, born at Rutheran Farm, Glassford on 11 March 1858.

Charlotte is at Rutheran Farm on the 1861 Census, at the Free Church Manse, Glassford on the 1871 Census and at Walston Place Farmhouse, Walston on the 1881 Census, where she is employed as a Dairymaid.

Charlotte married David Dickson (b. Borthwick, Midlothian c.1854), son of John Dickson and Helen Livingstone, at West Lindsaylands Farm, Biggar on 26 July 1882. David is a Cattle Dealer.

Charlotte and David are in Biggar on the 1891 and 1901 Census.

Charlotte died at 19 King Street, Edinburgh on 3 November 1926, age 68. Her usual address is Carstane, Broughton, Peebleshire.

DEATHS

William died at Rutheran Farm on 16 October 1861, age 56.

Jean died at Shawtonhill Farm, Glassford on 1 June 1886, age 71.
