William Fleming – Isabella Morrison

William Fleming, son of Hugh Fleming and Mary Craig, born in Avondale, Lanarkshire on 17 January 1824.

William is at Low Ploughland Farm, Avondale on the 1841 Census.

Isabella Morrison, daughter of John Morrison and Jane Lindsay, born in Avondale c.1823.

Isabella is possibly at Holme of Hookhead Farm, Avondale on the 1841 Census.

William and Isabella were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Avondale on 20 August 1846.

William and Isabella are at Templeland Farm, Avondale on the 1851 Census.

Isabella is at Templeland Farm on the 1861 Census. Her relationship to head of household is shown as ‘Wife’, and her marital status is ‘Mar’. However, there is no mention of William, and against her name is shown ‘Farmer of 20ac employing 1 wom’.

Isabella is at Templeland Farm on the 1871 Census, by which time she is identified as widowed, and again on the 1881 Census. She is at Overhouse Farm, Avondale on the 1891 and 1901 Census.

CHILDREN

Hugh Fleming, born in Avondale on 17 November 1846.

Hugh presumably died in infancy, or at least before 1851.

John Fleming, born at Templeland Farm on 29 June 1848.

John is at Templeland Farm on the 1851 and 1861 Census. He is lodging at 135 Cumberland Street, Govan, Lanarkshire on the 1871 Census;  his occupation is Shopman Draper. Also at this address is his younger brother William, employed in the same capacity.

John emigrated to the United States, arriving in Portland, Maine on 24 April 1872. He became a naturalised US citizen on 21 October 1878. His occupation is ‘Salesman’.

Jane Fleming, born at Templeland Farm on 5 March 1850.

Jane is at Templeland Farm on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 Census.

Jane married Alexander Craig of Bankend Farm, Avondale (b. Bankend Farm on 12 July 1836), son of William Craig and Jean Anderson, at Templeland Farm on 30 June 1875.

Jane and Alexander are at Bankend Farm on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census.

Jane died at Bankend Farm on 30 July 1908, age 58.

Alexander is at Bankend Farm on the 1911 Census. He died at his retirement home “Craigmains”, 59 Lethame Road, Strathaven on 9 May 1930.

Hugh Fleming, born at Templeland Farm on 23 February 1852.

Hugh is at Templeland Farm on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Census and at Overhouse Farm, Avondale on the 1891 Census.

Hugh married Jessie Hamilton (b. Avondale on 20 September 1856), daughter of William Hamilton and Janet Yuill, at the Avondale Inn, Avondale on 26 December 1895.

Hugh and Jessie are at Overhouse Farm on the 1901 Census.

Hugh died at Overhouse Farm on 27 November 1909, age 57.

Jessie died at Hareshawhill Farm on 21 February 1926, age 69.

William Fleming, born at Highside Farm, Loudoun, Ayrshire on 1 June 1854.

William is at Templeland Farm on the 1861 Census. He is lodging at 135 Cumberland Street, Govan, Lanarkshire on the 1871 Census;  his occupation is Shopman Draper. Also at this address is his older brother John, employed in the same capacity.

William is at Overhouse Farm on the 1881 Census. He died here on 13 August 1894, age 40.

DEATHS

William’s date and place of death are unknown. He is missing from the 1861 Census although his wife is not identified as widowed. He is not mentioned as deceased on his father’s death certificate from 1855.

Isabella died at Bankend Farm, Avondale on 4 September 1910, age 87.
